Staff Picks: 8 Essential Albums for Starting a Pop Collection
Share
One thing is for sure: there is a lot of pop around. Everywhere you look - pop. I guess that's the point.
It's not actually that long since I actually started collecting vinyl. Life-long music fan, yes - but vinyl collecting was something I 'gave in' to and decided to embrace after 20 years of seeing how much joy it brought my partner.
But where to start? How do you begin to build out a pop collection on vinyl?
Well - let me take you through the ten albums I'd buy on day one if I was building my collection from scratch. Some of these are albums everyone should own on the physical format, some are just my favourites. Here goes:
1. There's only one place to start. Taylor. For a newcomer starting their record collection, 1989(Taylor's Version) is arguably the most essential Taylor Swift album to own on vinyl. This record cemented her transition to a global pop superstar, delivering a stream of perfectly polished, 80s-inspired synth-pop hits like "Shake It Off" and "Blank Space" that sound fantastic on a good turntable. As a "Taylor's Version," it offers superior audio fidelity and the bonus of "From The Vault" tracks, giving new collectors both a chart-topping pop masterpiece and a substantial, high-quality pressing to start your journey.
2. Fleetwood Mac's Rumours (1977) is an essential addition to any vinyl collection, especially for pop enthusiasts. Its legendary status comes not just from its massive commercial success and chart-topping singles like "Go Your Own Way" and "Dreams," but from the incredible warmth and detail of its production. Recorded amidst intense emotional turmoil and inter-band relationships, the album's rich, layered sound and stunning vocal harmonies translate beautifully to the analog format. Audiophiles frequently praise its excellent engineering, making the vinyl pressing an incredibly immersive listening experience that highlights the subtle complexities and raw emotion embedded in this timeless pop-rock masterpiece.
3. Madonna's Like a Virgin (1984) is a landmark entry for any pop vinyl collection because it perfectly captures the moment Madonna ascended to global superstardom. Produced by Chic's Nile Rodgers, the album is a high-energy, polished slice of mid-80s dance-pop that sounds incredibly vibrant on vinyl. It features her most iconic, boundary-pushing singles, including the title track and the ironically provocative "Material Girl." The blend of electronic production with live, organic instrumentation (often cited as "Chic's last great album" due to the session musicians) gives the record a warmth and dynamic punch that showcases why vinyl is an ideal format for this energetic, foundational piece of pop history.
4. Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black (2006) is an absolutely vital album for a modern pop collection, standing out due to its incredible fusion of contemporary attitude and throwback 60s Motown soul. The entire record, featuring timeless tracks like "Rehab" and the deeply emotional title track, was produced by Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, who employed a live, retro-style backing band (The Dap-Kings). This dedication to authentic, analog instrumentation makes the album sound uniquely rich and dynamic on vinyl, delivering a depth and warmth that complements Amy’s powerful, singular voice perfectly. It’s a flawless modern classic that bridges decades of pop, soul, and jazz.
5. Lady Gaga's Mayhem (2025) is an essential, high-octane choice for a modern vinyl collection, representing a thrilling and complex evolution of her signature pop sound. The album is a carefully constructed blend of genres—primarily synth-pop and industrial dance—creating an intense listening experience on a physical format. Critics lauded it as a bold return to form, with its chaotic yet cohesive production, featuring songs like the massively popular duet "Die with a Smile" and the dark-pop single "Disease." I consider this one a 'current classic' and while I wouldn't say Gaga has ever been off-form, this effort is the most on-form she's been for a while. It's a pop triumph.
6. Adele's 21 (2011) is a mandatory album for any burgeoning pop vinyl collection, primarily because it's a showcase for one of the greatest vocal talents of the 21st century and features monumental hits like "Rolling in the Deep" and "Someone Like You." The album's production, which expertly fuses soul, blues, and contemporary pop, was helmed by industry legends including Rick Rubin and Paul Epworth. Collecting 21 is not just about owning a record that won six Grammys and defined a decade of music; it's about experiencing a powerhouse, foundational work of modern balladry in the most engaging, physical format.
7. Elastica's self-titled debut album is here - in part - because it's my favourite album of all time. But more than that, because it broke the record for fastest selling debut of all time. The discovery of this album and band shaped most things that happened to me after. It appeared at the beginning of a journey of self discovery for a little gay kid who didn’t know what or who he was, and was the catalyst for what is often referred to as my lifelong ‘predictable obsession with girls with guitars’.
This album made me pick up my first guitar, and eventually Justine’s signature black telecaster, which in turn led to bands being formed and our own records recorded, but more than that - it led to me finding ‘my people’ and the places where I didn’t feel so different.
Oh, it's also considered one of the most significant albums of the Britpop era - an era that paved the way for many female artists who followed.
8. While many Ariana Grande albums are pop essentials, thank u, next (2019) is the most compelling choice for a vinyl collector. This record brilliantly fuses trap-infused R&B with pure pop sensibility, and its raw, diaristic subject matter—featuring instant classics like the title track and the explosive "7 rings"—makes it a landmark of modern pop. Crucially, the production on the vinyl pressing is lauded for its depth, giving the heavy bass lines a satisfying presence and allowing her incredible vocal runs and layers of harmony to sound spacious and crystal-clear. It captures Ariana at her creative peak, delivering a rich, dynamic listening experience that truly utilizes the warmth and power of the analog format.
